How Anyone Can Become More Successful At Work

August 29th, 2010

Logically, when we are working, we should always do our absolute best every day; sadly, that just does not happen with a lot of people.

Thinking about how many folks just aren’t doing as much as they are capable of every day really does make me shake my head. Based on that, I have implemented some things to help me to always do the best job that I can each and every day. By doing that, my professional life has gotten so much better.

If you want to change your work performance like I have, then read on about the strategies I now adhere to and make a point of following them consistently. If you do, you will see a big improvement in how much more effectively you do things.

First off, it’s always important to set goals. Without goals, we’ll often work aimlessly without even thinking about what it is that we’re going after.

Make some targets for yourself, no matter how big or small. I actually happen to find that setting smaller goals gives me a very attainable thing to work towards, always keeping my interest level high. Then, reward yourself once you’ve hit a goal.

Secondly, I have found it very helpful to keep a written account of how much progress I make every day. As time passes, after you have begun to do this, you will be putting more and more positive writings in there and, perhaps, you just might want to start a blog. This is a very good thing to do each day.

Last, but certainly not least, is keeping yourself fit and doing your best to eat healthier, two things that I feel are very important since they both ultimately affect how much energy one has. Remember, having lots of energy means that you will be able to get everything done more quickly and easily.

Go ahead and give these strategies a try and watch how much more productive you can be. The main thing to keep in your thoughts is that you must maintain your focus so that you can reach your goals.

Bus Stop Shuffle And You

August 15th, 2010

ople just standing there, moving around Some making sounds others sitting on the ground Watching, waiting, walkman music in their ears Anticipation developing, smoking, puffing Inhaling and exhaling shallow breath Frustrating at time regarding the dynamics At the bus stop; it’s running late for work

Boss getting on folks backs about being late It wasn’t my fault the bus was not on time” Get up earlier and get here on time!” My baby sitter is not available at that time.” Don’t give me any excuses; one more time and you’re out!” This is such a disgusting situation for many Car in the shop; can’t pay the repair bills Now there is a lien on it; no money to pay Might as well take the bus-it’s always late!

Wintertime it’s cold and worst Unlike summer where it warm and the bus is early Now it is winter and it is late-always late! Especially when it’s snowing out Standing with a baby outside early in the morning Below zero, cold as hell, snow falling “Dude he wants me out there!” “He is crazy; go see the personnel department.” “He is the personnel department.” “Ah well-shoot!” “Hell, see what I am saying?”

People going through it; lost in the shuffle System against them; fighting for survival everyday Some just showing, playing, sucking up The game goes on until it ends When, where, and how-who knows? Folks hanging in there, playing the game Don’t drop the ball or you will be out-on the bench! Get a pair of gloves and learn how to catch man They are throwing some cure balls And they are very fast Don’t strike out Nor drop the ball Else you won’t last!

One of the people in the group suggested we should have used a private transport company but I had no idea what to look for online. One member of the group said they would type in to Google the search term bus charter Sydney, one member said bus hire Sydney and another suggested that since we were a small group we should search minibus charter Sydney as chartering a bus we would know comes with a professional driver and not from some rental company that would get their mates to do the driving. So, a minibus charter company or charter bus company with mini buses.

When I got home late that night I went on to the major search engines and had a look and found some companies and looked at their services, most offered a chartered minibus but there were a few rental companies as well that didn’t appeal to me even though they offered drivers. The biggest drawback with the rental companies offering drivers is that the vehicles have been abused by rentals over the years and rarely do they repair them so you’d end up with some beaten up vehicle that’s been to hell & back. So charter bus companies it is.

A few months later we planned another outing with the group from Riverview to a restaurant in Darling Harbour but this time we chartered a mini bus. The vehicle arrived 10 minutes prior to our time and we could see the driver checking the vehicles tyres and general inspection which gave us a good feeling knowing he was being professional. The mini bus was clean and well-presented and it only took 20 minutes to get to the city in the bus lane. We all looked at each other and smiled with approval and the ease and comfort we had for our evening. We were dropped as close as possible to our destination and we complimented the driver and in a great frame of mind we all had a wonderful time. The driver was waiting where he had dropped us off with the air-conditioner on and we rode the mini bus back to our location in 20 minutes. Successful night! We saved a potential 5 hours of hassle using public transport with discomfort and noise and we rode in a deluxe minibus with a good driver.

Five Effective Business Analysis Techniques

June 3rd, 2010

The term business analysis refers to the discipline of identifying needs within a business, and determining the appropriate solution.

These solutions may include changes in the organization itself, strategic development or development of new policies. The person who takes on the responsibility of business analysis is called a business analyst.

When the time inevitably comes for some sort of change, the business analyst has several techniques at his disposal. Precisely which techniques are used will depend on the nature of the problem, and the scope of the solution. Here are five that are used successfully by business analysts to help solve an array of different problems.

MOST

The MOST technique is an internal analysis. It contains four attributes that are defined by the business analyst to ensure the project you are working on is aligned and on track. These attributes are as follows:

Mission (where the business intends to go) Objectives (the key goals that will help achieve mission) Strategies (the different options for moving forward) Tactics (how the different strategies are put into action)

PESTLE

The PESTLE technique is an external analysis designed to examine the many different external elements affecting a business and its operations. It includes six attributes:

Political (Current and future political influences) Economic (The local, national and world economy impact) Sociological (Different ways society can affect an organization) Technological (The effect of new and emerging technology) Legal (The effect of national and world legislation) Environmental (Local, national and world environmental issues)

CATWOE CATWOE is a technique used to encourage critical thinking about what the business is trying to achieve. There are six different elements included in this technique: Customers (who benefits from the highest level business process and how does the issue affect them?) Actors (who is involved in the situation? Who is implementing solutions? What will impact their success?) Transformation Process (what processes or systems are affected by the issue?) World View (what is the big picture and what are the wider impacts of the issue?) Owner (who owns the process or situation being investigated and what is their role in the solution?) Environmental Constraints (what are the limitations that will impact the solution and its success?)

SWOT

A SWOT analysis is used to give a more complete overview of both internal and external factors affecting a business. There are four attributes to SWOT:

Strengths (examine advantages and what is done well within the company) Weaknesses (examine the disadvantages and areas that need improvement) Opportunities (examine opportunities for improvement in all areas, including market share) Threats (examine the obstacles the business faces in accomplishing their goals)

FIVE WHY’S

The Five Why’s technique is used to help get to the root of any given problem within the business intelligence. It is a question asking method to examine the cause and effect of a particular situation.

You will start with a problem, such as “my car won’t start,” then ask a succession of why questions until the root of the problem is uncovered and a solution is evident.

Business Analysis can be a complex and intricate process. Within this broad spectrum lie several sub-disciplines, roles and even more techniques.

All businesses encounter situations and problems that need attention to help keep them moving forward. With a skilled business analyst employing the right techniques, a solution won’t be far behind.

Get Your Staff Out Of The Office & See A Brand New Business

May 28th, 2010

Finding time to have those important meetings, carry out key training or discuss important details, without being interrupted can often be difficult in the current climate. Client serving companies, in particular, can find this difficult, and often have trouble applying the thinking and services they do so well for clients to their own business.

A great solution to this is to hold your meeting outside of the office space.

Holding a meeting away from your usual workspace, has a great deal of positives and can improve relations and productivity long after you’re back in the office.

If you are training staff or implementing new processes, then from a development perspective holding the session away from the office provides a neutral environment, free of distractions where the old hierarchies of the office can be forgotten and a new way of communicating can be used.

When faced with a problem/issue in this type of environment a person will respond in their most natural way, whereas in the work setting they are more likely to respond in a way confined by their job role or the way they are perceived in the workplace. By allowing a team to respond in the most natural way, they can get more from a session, and the trainer can learn more about the ‘real’ people they are working with.

Another benefit of not being in the office is that you are much less likely to be interrupted. This seems obvious and may not be regarded as that imperative, but if a discussion or training session is incessantly disrupted by telephone calls, general office noise and emails pinging onto laptops, it can have a serious impact on what is achieved.

For example, when a strategy meeting is interrupted those taking part lose their thread, become less enthusiastic and take longer to cover a topic- ultimately diminishing the quality of the decision making process.

Similarly in a training session if the educator is interrupted, those taking part the session will lose interest and the content of the training is undermined before those learning have even left the room.

So for increased productivity, knowledge retention, enthusiasm and natural behaviour, consider taking your next training session, board meeting or strategy session away from the office. Getting out - whether for an hour or a week- can make a big difference to your business and the people that make it!

Why not hold your next big internal meeting outside of the office at a corporate conference venue, or reward your staff with a corporate team building event.

7 Transformational Leadership Series: McGregor’s Theories

May 16th, 2010

Transformational Leadership Series: Douglas McGregor’s Theory X and Y. Theory X and theory Y are theories of human motivation created and developed by Douglas McGregor at the MIT Sloan School of Management in the 1960s that have been used in human resource management, organizational behavior, and organizational development. They describe two very different attitudes toward workforce motivation. McGregor felt that companies followed either one or the other approach. Contents [hide] 1 Theory X 2 Theory Y 3 McGregor and Maslow’s hierarchy 4 Criticisms 5 Further reading [edit] Theory X In this theory, management assumes employees are inherently lazy and will avoid work if they can. Because of this, workers need to be closely supervised and comprehensive systems of controls developed. A hierarchical structure is needed with narrow span of control at each level. According to this theory, employees will show little ambition without an enticing incentive program and will avoid responsibility whenever they can. The Theory X manager tends to believe that everything must end in blaming someone. He or she thinks all prospective employees are only out for themselves. Usually these managers feel the sole purpose of the employees interest in the job is money. They will blame the person first in most situations, without questioning whether it may be the system, policy, or lack of training that deserves the blame. Furthermore, Theory X supervisors cannot trust any employee, and they

The Benefits Of A University Over Community College

May 5th, 2010

While the majority of us think that a university degree will advance us in our chosen careers, there are some who still think you should get there through hard work and not because of a piece of paper. Here we have a few comparisons between university and community college educations.

One of the main, and very obvious advantages, is that you have the possibility of higher earnings in the future. While there is nothing in this world that guarantees you will be employed in your chosen field, the fact remains that if you are lucky enough to be, your potential earnings are greatly increased.

University isn’t just about gaining your degree. This is obviously the reason for being there, but attending college is a life changing experience that has much to do with living on campus. You don’t get this experience from attending a community college.

For those who have never lived alone or have never traveled much, the thought of living on campus and meeting so many new people is what tips the balance and makes them decide to opt for university. It is an exciting time and an opportunity that you shouldn’t miss out on.

Another plus from going to university is the diversity of your fellow students. There could be people on your lecture from many different nations, all bringing their culture into the mix.

The only community colleges that have anywhere near this kind of diversity are the ones in the larger, multi-ethnic cities. Like New York for example.

If you want to experience how life is for different cultures, then university supplies this. As a community colleges is basically a commuter campus the same as a school, the main student body is more likely to be those who can travel easily to it; so the cultural diversity doesn’t exist.

Another thing you’ll be missing out on by attending your local community college is the opportunity to experience the arts programs that the universities take great pride in. Going to a concert or to the theater with your fellow students is a big part of student life, so don’t miss out on it.
