1. Keep bad food in areas that are not easily accessible. One study showed that people eat 300% more candy when it’s within arms’ reach. 2. Use smaller eating devices. A really cool study showed that people unconsciously eat 50% more ice cream when using jumbo spoons and bowls. This happened because the scoops of ice cream looked much much smaller next to the large eating devices.

3. Use tall and thin glassware when drinking calorie-laden liquids. People will poor up to 30% more liquid when using short glasses versus tall glasses. You see, a volume of liquid looks much smaller in a short/wide glass versus a tall/thin glass.

4. Don’t let your plates be cleared at a buffet. If you do, you’ll end up eating 25% more. You see, when your plates are constantly cleared, you forget how much you have eaten. Thus, you keep on eating well beyond your needs.

Can You Lose Arm Flab With Your Thoughts?

When trying to lose arm flab, exercise and nutrition are only part of the equation. In fact, they aren’t even the most important parts of the equation.

There is so much free information out there that most women know how to eat and exercise in a relatively healthy way.

The main issue that holds most women back when trying to lose arm flab, is an inability to stick with something for extended periods of time.

You see, a poor mental strategy will lead to massive undulations in motivation. And keeping a high level of motivation all the time is the key to sexy arm stardom. I grappled with this issue for a very long time. But I found a cure.

What was my saving grace? The one and only David Burns M.D. He wrote an excellent book which provided easy to use methods for optimizing thought processes. Central to his method, was the identification of major thought distortions.

So without further ado, here are 3 major cognitive distortions you need to know today so that you have motivation tomorrow:

1. Coercive statements. The “no pain no gain” attitude that pervades our culture has kept this type of cognitive distortion alive and kicking. If you find yourself saying, “I should exercise today” or “I must exercise today”, stop immediately. Should and must are coercive words that will make you feel pressured and will eventually kill your desire to keep moving forward.

2. Labeling statements. If you ever find yourself attaching a label to a hiccup on your part, stop immediately. Labels (i.e., loser, worthless, slob, sloth) create the illusion that there is an internal problem with you that can be fixed. Instead of using labels, describe the situation that led to the hiccup so that you can avoid it in the future.

3. Minimizing statements. This type of distortion will make you go from warrior to worrier. Why? Because when you minimize, you see your potential as being much much smaller than it actually is. Do you know anyone that seems to have everything going for them but is constantly putting themselves down? This would be a minimizer. The key here is to not assume you don’t have what it takes until you’ve actually tried.

If you want to lose arm flab, you have to have the right mental game plan in place. Without it, your motivation is likely to fade with time. Keeping the above in mind, will bring you one step closer to constant motivation.

Could your job be the source of your upper arm fat?

So here is what to look out for at your job:

1. Lack of control. Not being in control is a primary cause of work related stress. And the stress causes your body to secrete hormones which lead to more arm fat accumulation.

2. Excess tenseness. If you feel like you are in a constant state of tension, stress hormones are going to flood your body. And said hormones can alter levels of arm fat. One simple test is to assess how stiff your neck muscles are.

3. Poorly delineated tasks. If what you have to do is unclear, stress and tension will rise. And keep in mind that lack of clarity, more often than not, is your superiors fault. So ask for clear tasks. Tell your superiors how increased clarity will allow you to be more productive for the company.

4. Job status. If you have a higher position within your company, you are more likely to be healthier. And if you can’t reach the top rungs at your workplace, seek out activities outside of work in which you can have a dominant role.

5. Having a mono-identity. Don’t let your work define who you are. When things are going good you will feel good. But anytime something goes bad you will get flooded with all those stress hormones. Subjecting yourself to this emotional roller coaster is unnecessary.

I would like to point out that there is only so much you can do. If you find that your workplace is simply not healthy, then please start taking the necessary steps for a transition. You deserve good health today, not tomorrow. And you just might find that the upper arm fat melts like butter!

What you eat is just as important as anything else, and your diet can definitely play a role in your overall mental and emotional demeanor. Eating foods loaded with sugars and starches gives you a temporary lift in spirits, followed by a much stronger crash. These should be avoided.

The WOW Factor: Encouragement as a Motivator

I was walking the winding looping steep trail at my local park on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The trail is about a half of a mile and very steep in some portions. A great workout. So here I was walking at a very fast pace. A stranger in workout gear was running the opposite direction. He was very fit and looked like he was having a good run. As he passed me he yelled out “way to go!” He was looking directly at me. I was somewhat shocked at being addressed by a stranger. Who was he anyway? On the second lap I earned a smile and a ” keep going!” On the third lap a big wave. So here I was starting to feel good about the encouragement of a stranger! This was an amazing experience and really got me thinking. I wanted to do well for my new “coach”. I actually ran the last lap to please him.

Stop what you are doing and think about this for one moment. In your organization who should be the one who provides the most encouragement and motivation? You. Consider the power encouragement can have. So before you stop reading this, here is a compelling reason : results. So lets put the PMA stuff aside for a minute and understand that as a leader your job is to get results. That can’t be through you it has to be through your people. So as the leader you have to give them encouragement, high energy and make them feel appreciated. They want their work to be recognized. The issue is that most leaders dont do this at all. So your job is to be the CEO- cheif encouragement officer.

So here are some ideas for providing encouragement that are quick and effective. They may seem small but they can be very effective in helping get better results.

Speak to all people- Many times I have seen a “big wig” walk into a room at a big meeting with hundreds of employees, pass by everyone, ignoring them and greeting other ” big wigs ” on the far side of the room. How silly is that? They were making the small people feel even smaller. This created resentment and people felt slighted. Who would blame them? What a huge error. When you are touring or visiting an office or even in your own offices do you take the time to say “hello” to people? Maybe you are pressed for time. Do you at least give people non verbal positive signals? They need the small gestures of acknowledgement.

Applaud their work- I was once up upon a time an execuitve with a big company. If I saw someone performaing at a high level I would hand write a card (embossed with my name at the top) and would thank them for their great work. I would be on the road and visit an office and find that card that I wrote proudly displayed. So the lesson was that everyone wants some credit for their work, a thank you, or a pat on the back. Front line people often tell me they never get a compliment. So when people work really hard to do something ” over and above” the call of duty, make sure to notice and acknowledge it. When people do great work let them know!

Take the good with the bad- People makes mistakes all the time right? It is part of being a human being on the planet. As a professional facilitator when I ask people to critique their role plays they always start with negative stuff first. So I guess it is a built in part of self esteem- we are often too hard on ourselves. So then as a leader we “pile on” always finding fault. This kills motivation and morale I am looking for balance. When you discuss someone’s performance there should always be a mix of positive feedback with the “improve” feedback. The critical doesn’t need to be eliminated, just mix it up.

Catch them at their best- Acknowledge efforts and not at time and place it would always be expected. Look, the small things always mean alot. Find small ways to reward your folks. This can be things like a box of danish in the morning, taking someone out for lunch, giving them a few extra perks here and there. Just make sure to let them know it is a reward and what it is a reward for. Tell them ” hey- I know you put in countless hours on the Smith Account- thanks for your hard work. Take next friday off.” They will appreciate being appreciated. They will go home and tell their familiy about it. They will feel proud.

The secret to great leadership is really not a secret at all. You as a leader need to encourage people, help them feel as if their work matters because it does. We all matter.
